Basic Training

Step 1: You're a new adult leader in Scouting. What training MUST you take?

Fast Start Training
  • The first step for all new leaders
  • Should be taken immediately after you register and before you meet with any Scouts
  • There is a version for Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Varsity Scout Leader and Venturing Crew Leader
  • Take the course online through the Online Learning Center in MyScouting (if you are new to Scouting, you will be asked to create an account)
Youth Protection Training
  • Required for all registered adult leaders
  • Take the course online through the Online Learning Center in MyScouting (if you are new to Scouting, you will be asked to create an account)
This is Scouting

Step 2: To be considered a fully "Trained" leader for a leadership position, take:

Position Specific Training
  • You must take the course specific to your position (example: if you're a Tiger Den Leader, take Tiger Den Leader Specific Training. If you're an Assistant Scoutmaster, take Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training.)
  • Taught by trained volunteers who have "been there" and know how to engage groups and make learning fun
  • Courses are offered by the council every third Saturday of each month

IF YOU'RE A CUB SCOUT LEADER: you're now a trained leader. You may opt to also take Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO), since someone has to be BALOO-certified for your pack to go camping (CLICK HERE to see if any BALOO courses are open for registration).

IF YOU'RE A BOY SCOUT LEADER: in addition to Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, you must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained (CLICK HERE to see if any IOLS courses are open for registration).
IF YOU'RE A VARSITY SCOUT LEADER: in addition to Varsity Scout Coach Leader Specific Training, you must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained (CLICK HERE to see if any IOLS courses are open for registration).
